Smart Surface: Haptic Interaction System for Safer and More Intuitive Driving
This project explores haptic feedback systems for intelligent vehicle interfaces, focusing on how touch-based interaction can enhance safety, reduce cognitive load, and improve driver comfort.
The system integrates two major components:
a smart center console that provides tactile feedback for control operations (sliders, buttons, and knobs), allowing drivers to interact accurately without visual distraction;
a smart seat embedded with pressure sensors that monitors posture, detects fatigue, and delivers adaptive tactile alerts.
A driving simulator study evaluates how haptic feedback influences user performance, reaction time, attention allocation, and long-term comfort. Results aim to inform the design of next-generation automotive human–machine interfaces (HMIs) that merge sensing, interaction, and safety into a seamless experience.
